"Buying a puppy is a lifetime commitment, .........as is breeding one."

While the "perfect dog" is what every reputable breeder strives for , sadly the perfect dog is a myth.  In the bloodhound world there are many  bloodhounds that are  very close to perfection , and on the flip side others that are infact purebred but do not resemble the bloodhound breed! You may not be looking for the next superstar showdog, but it should matter to you that your dog has a good structure, breed type , good temperament, and good health. Reputable breeders strive for producing puppies that are sound in all these departments. In my own opinion if you buy from a backyard breeder that has never shown their hounds and has little knowledge or experience with the breed , you are NOT getting quality. Remember "Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives." Although the puppy advertised on some puppy website may be cheaper, in the end you could be paying the ultimate price getting a puppy that is not healthy mentally or physically.

There are few things in this world that are more adorable  than a bloodhound puppy. Which may also be why at times purchasing a bloodhound puppy has not been  an informed or  careful decision  by some. There are more things to consider before bringing  a bloodhound into your  life than with most other breeds. Bloodhounds are not the easiest dogs to live with and they require a tremendous amount of patience and dedication.  Bloodhounds do best with a repetitive routine, and structure in their everyday life. A bloodhound requires all the same things a human baby does. What I mean is they require ;  proper housing, proper nutrition, health care, , patience, stability, education( obedience), rules/ boundaries, time, safety, a lot of money and most of all a lot of love. Are you prepared?  The old saying  "it takes a village to raise a child" applies to dogs as well. They need to be exposed to all different sizes of dogs , people and situations.  The last thing you want is a 100+ unsocialized ill mannered dog. Obedience classes are a must for a first time bloodhound owner.

You  must first decide
is the bloodhound right for you? The breed is not right for many, in fact I believe few people are meant for bloodhounds . Look around you, how many bloodhounds are in your neighbourhood? How many are in your city? How many are in your Province/State? There is a reason!  Then you must decide, do you want to purchase a puppy or  would you like to adopt a bloodhound from Rescue, both have their positive and negative points, please carefully consider both. Do not be surprised if you are on a 1-3 year waiting list, remember "good things are worth waiting for" there should be no rush in obtaining a family member.  Then you will have to decide  on pet or show .  Anya is first and foremost a pet , she does not live life on the road going from show to show, but rather lives a regular pet life with the occasional weekend trip. Showing your dog does not necessarily mean you should breed him or her but it is a very fun and rewarding sport. Showing is not  a sport meant for only professional handlers , there has been  many owner/handlers (novices) that have put championships on their dogs. Showing is a great way to meet people especially other "bloodhound people" it is a great way to socialize for yourself and your dog.  If you have children junior handling can also be a very fun and rewarding sport for your child. Please do not dismiss the idea until you have researched it and  talked to a breeder about it. Most of all  make sure the decision you make is a sound one considering this dog will be under you care for it's entire life, consider the stability of your life in all aspects. If you are willing do all that is takes to properly raise a bloodhound,a bloodhound can be a dream come true for many. Owning a bloodhound can be an amazing and memorable experience but if you are not prepared to give it your all, you could truely be sorry.  BUYER BEWARE Click Here
